B.A. Journalism admission to commence soon

Online Applications for B.A. in Journalism for the Academic year 2020-21 at St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa-Goa will begin after 15th July, 2020.

Media Matters: A Web Talk Series — Part 2

 

In the sixth web talk, Ms. Aishwarya Iyer, Senior Correspondent for The Quint, Delhi presented a strong narrative on minorities and communally sensitive stories covered by the ‘The Quint’ before and even during the pandemic. She called it ‘Telling stories, no one is willing to tell’,  known for her fierce journalism and nonpartisan views Aishwarya shared her firsthand accounts of covering the Delhi riots as well as mob lynching cases, and how she has learnt to deal with these stories with empathy and an objective perspective. Being a women journalist she spoke of how important it is to be sensitive to the people you interview by putting them first to tell their stories, however she also added having a trustworthy network of ground sources is equally important.

Whereas in the seventh Web talk on 27th June, a veteran Journalist from Goa, Mr. Sandesh Parbhudesai spoke on “Changing Face of Goan Media in Regional Languages” with an interesting history on the origins of Print, TV and Cable industry in Goa. While interacting with the participants he discussed how the pandemic has changed the workflow as well as work force in Goa, highlighting the shutting down of newspaper like Gomantak Times as well as the layoffs and pay cuts happening in the industry. However he also highlighted that this economic recession and pandemic have affected all major industries and hence the need of the hour is to look at social media and digital platforms to bring news to the audiences. While speaking about regional languages he was affirmative that Konkani has a larger audience and that news content would grow in the coming years across platforms.

In the Web talk held on 29th June, Mr. Vishal Nayak K, Assistant Professor of St. Aloysius College, Mangaluru presented his views on the topic “Digital Content Marketing and Customer Engagement – Indian Perspective” in a holistic and practical manner. He discussed the importance of digital marketing in integrated marketing approach and explained how it differs from traditional advertising. Giving the background of the ongoing pandemic, Vishal highlighted how brands look at customer engagement as an important part of sustaining their business as well. He also shared the key features necessary in working at good customer management.

And in the final Web talk held on 30th June, Mr. Mayabhushan Nagvenkar, Senior correspondent of IANS, introduced the participants to the world of investigative journalism and discussed the skills & characteristics required while working undercover. He elucidated it with brief instances of his stories and how he worked in different circumstances. According to him inquisitiveness is the key – to keep asking questions makes you a journalist in the true sense. He also spoke about his recent venture of authoring a biography on the Late CM of Goa and Ex-Defense Minister, Shri. Manohar Parrikar “An Extraordinary Life A Biography of Manohar Parrikar”., while explaining the process he also highlighted why this was a special book with regards to Parrikar as a Goan Politician as well as his determination in getting Goa on the national map.

Shayal Devi , student of Journalism, remarked that Media Matters was an innovative and enjoyable way of looking at issues and functioning of the Media industry during the Coronavirus pandemic. She added, the web talk was an eye opener as industry specialists spoke about the challenges they faced and the way forward. This will be indeed helpful for budding journalists and communication students who are preparing for a career in the field.

Panicker Aditya Raj from St. Aloysius College- Mangalore said “It was a great session! Even though I was from science background I enjoyed this interactive session and i got to learn something out of the box”.

Manasi Talaulikar , student from Chowgule College added that “the talks were very informative and as it was interactive made it even better as we could get all our queries resolved and get additional information regarding the topic.”

P Vaishali from the University of Madras said “the interaction with the participants was good  in Media Matters which is actually missing in most of the web talks.”

Selva Bharathy N from Guru Nanak College, Tamil Nadu appreciated Media Matters as “There was so much information that I have collected from the web talk series, I have enjoyed  participating in the web talk series ”.

Asher Fernandes, a Mass Communication student from Goa said “ the Sessions were informative and meaningful and introduced them to a superb line up of Speakers from the media industry who were well versed with their subjects as well as exhibited commendable communication skills.”

Media Matters ’20: A Web Talk Series — Part 1

A series of web Talks focusing on the issues, challenges and opportunities in the world of Media was organized by the Department of Journalism and Department of Mass Communication of St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa from  11th June to  30th June 2020. The maiden Web talk edition of Media matters 2020 on Media and Communication received an over whelming response from over 230 participants consisting of students, academicians and members of media fraternity from across the country especially from Goa, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Punjab, Delhi, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Kerala.

To tide over the difficulties faced in interacting and ideating during the Lockdown, the first Web talk was held on 11th June to discuss the future of PR as an industry. The resource person Ms. Yashodhara Roy, Account Manager of Edelman India who has worked with major brands like Ponds, Rolex and Amazon Audible spoke on the topic of Brand Communication and how it works in the field of PR. She stressed on the need of storytelling as a basic tenet in the client-servicing process. She went on to illustrate these with the help of vivid case studies of clients she had handled and how it helped her grow in confidence and management skills.

In the second Web talk held on 16th June Mr. Sachin Chatte, Film critic discussed ‘Cinema Aaj aur Kal’ He spoke about Indian Cinema and how OTT (Over the Top) platforms have changed the manner in which the industry functions. In an extremely interactive session Chatte highlighted the different formats which are now becoming popular on the digital platform and how traditional distribution systems in Cinema have to rework their business models amidst the pandemic.

Whereas in the third web talk held on 18th June  on the topic Digital Media vs. Print Media – Can it co-exist?, Mr. Nikhil Pereira, Editor of ITP Media Group, Dubai shared his experience of how the styles of writing have changed and the difference between short form and long form of writing for the web. Upon being asked questions on what the future of journalism would be, Nikhil added that “both print and digital will co-exist”. There were queries about how the job industry has changed in the Middle East and he also spoke about how young students could begin their journey in this career.

On the 20th June, Media Matters hosted the fourth Web talk wherein Ms. DrishyaVenugopal, freelance PR executive from Chhattisgarh spoke on how Public relations works from the Internal and External publics as well as how stakeholders play an important role for any organisation. She highlighted that crisis management is also an important art of PR and how both soft skills as well strategy building helps during this time. Taking examples from MNCs like Uber, Zomato and Amazon she discussed their different approaches during the present pandemic.

The fifth Web talk of Media matters was held on the 24th of June with Mr. Aaron Pereira, Assistant Editor – Indian Express Delhi. He gave the participants an overview of how news content is generated and published for the news portals. He also spoke of importance of multimedia skills and why these play an important role in journalism today.
