Learning photography by Rosario Estebeiro

On 27th October 2022, third-year students of BA Mass Communication and Journalism department from St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa, had the golden opportunity to attend the Photography Workshop held by renowned and famous photographer Mr. Rozario Estebeiro. The workshop enlightened the students on indoor and outdoor photography and the ethics of photojournalism. The workshop was held in the TV studio of college.

The workshop began with Mr. Estebeiro showing students the importance of lighting when highlighting certain features in indoor photography. He explained to the students how different intensity of light, angles, and exposure has a tremendous effect during indoor photography. He gave and showed tricks and tips on clicking the perfect picture. Moreover, he was also encouraging the students to participate in the workshop by clicking pictures under his guidance. After this, Mr. Estebeiro also talked about ethics in photojournalism. He also mentioned how punctuality plays an important role and that a photojournalist should always be on their toes to capture a moment. He also showed the students some of the photographs that he had clicked. The photos ranged from nature photography, wedding shoots and pictures for print media. For the second half of the workshop, he took the students outside the studio and showed them how to take a photograph when the said object was in motion. He got the students to actively participate in clicking such pictures.

Students from Mass Communication and Journalism department found the workshop very helpful and enlightening. “The workshop was informative and awe-inspiring. Mr. Rozario Estebeiro showed us his past clicks both as a photojournalist and a wedding photographer. They were impressive and you could tell it took experience, an eye for the shot and some luck to capture them,” said Tejas Kochkar from the Journalism department. Similar thoughts were expressed by Mass Communication student Sidharth Kumar, “It bought many topics to light which I had very little knowledge about and also very helpful in understanding how photojournalist works and their daily schedule and also the light and its role in a photo.”

Students also expressed their thoughts on how they learned something new, unique and helpful. According to Mass Communication student Shane DeSouza, “Mr Estebeiro taught us about the play of light while clicking a photo and the interchanging role of compositions and framing in photography. Being punctual and being present at the place of the event was showed clearly through his photos. His photos during the fire for example, showed us that a job that is otherwise seen as simple and monotonous, revealed creativity and mesmerising beauty.” Journalism student Meghana Bhovi said that she learned various settings in the camera and gained more knowledge about indoor lighting. “As a photographer or a photojournalist, you need to have that ‘eye’ to tell your story through your photograph. Through this workshop we got to see Mr. Rosario’s work and how we can view things differently.”

Mr. Rozario Estebeiro has been interested in photography since he was a kid. Currently, he is working as a professional photojournalist for the past 20 years. His career as a photojournalist began in 2002. He also partakes in wedding photography and is a songwriter, cinematographer, and singer.

When asked what makes Prudent Media unique, both Mr. Vadkar and Mr. Acharya stated- “consistency.” Mr. Acharya added, “Being good is not enough, one must be good consistently. That is what sets Prudent apart.” He also advised students to be passionate about their work, as they will never enjoy life otherwise.
