Goa Forest Department and Cinephile Film Club Screen Two Captivating Documentaries: “Looking for Sultan” and “Snakes SOS: Goa’s Wildest”

Documentary screening event was organized by the Goa Forest Department and the Cinephile Film Club. The event, held at ESG, Panjim, featured two riveting films, “Looking for Sultan” and “Snakes SOS: Goa’s Wildest,” both of which shed light on the incredible wildlife and conservation efforts in the region.

A Glimpse into “Snakes SOS: Goa’s Wildest”

The evening commenced with a short film showcasing the breathtaking Mhadei River and the challenges it faces. The Goa Forest Department also introduced the talented directors, Gautam Pandey and Doel Trivedy, who were in attendance for a discussion on their respective films. The first documentary of the evening, “Snakes SOS: Goa’s Wildest,” captivated the audience with its portrayal of Benhail Antao and Louise Remedios, who dedicate themselves to rescuing snakes from various locations in Goa. Their commitment to this vital mission is commendable, and the film’s episodes are now available on Disney Hotstar.

“Looking for Sultan”: Unveiling the Mystery of a Disappearing Tiger

“Looking for Sultan,” the second documentary presented, narrates the compelling story of Sultan, an up-and-coming dominant tiger in Ranthambore who mysteriously vanished. Father and son wildlife filmmakers, Mike and Gautam, had been documenting Sultan’s life journey from cubhood. The film follows their relentless quest to solve the mystery of Sultan’s disappearance and highlights the challenges faced by wildlife once they venture beyond the safety of the forest.

Tigers leaving protected areas confront a multitude of dangers, including poachers and farmers resorting to drastic measures to protect their crops and livestock. The team perseveres, determined to locate Sultan before it’s too late. After the screening, director Gautam Pandey passionately emphasized the importance of saving tigers and protecting our precious forests.

The screening of “Looking for Sultan” and “Snakes SOS: Goa’s Wildest” brought the audience closer to the fascinating world of wildlife in Goa and ignited a sense of responsibility towards conservation.

Media students bag first place for Reel making competition

TYBA Journalism student Mr. Jadyn Periera of St. Xavier’s College achieved an impressive victory by winning the All Goa intercollegiate G20-themed Reel Making Competition organized by School of International & Area Studies, Goa University. Jadyn’s outstanding creativity and storytelling skills shone through in their entry, earning them the top spot. The competition showcased the talent in addressing global issues through the medium of filmmaking. Jadyn’s success reflects not only his dedication but also his ability to inspire and engage audiences through his thought-provoking reel. Mr. Pereira was also accompanied by Pratik Kharate (TY Mass Communication) for voice over in the process of the reel making.

“Unveiling insights: A compelling discussion with Diana Braganza”

On 6th October, an interactive session was held for F.Y.B.A. students from the Mass Communication and Journalism departments of St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa, with Diana Braganza, an alumnus of St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa, Goa, who is currently working as the Marketing and Brand Specialist at Grand Hyatt, Goa.

Diana has a plethora of experience in the fields of branding, marketing, and public relations that extends across 14 years. During the course of her career, she has also worked as an Associate Image Manager and Image Executive for Perfect Relations, Goa. She currently executes the roles of a Marketing Communications Manager, PR Manager, and PR Executive at Grand Hyatt Goa. Diana has an extensive set of expertise that include public

relations, influencer management, social media strategy and content writing among others.

Promoting interactivity within the session, Diana actively encouraged students to engage in discussions and offered practical insights by illustrating real-world applications. She utilized her extensive experience to convey essential information related to the curriculum, making the session extremely beneficial for all attendees. Additionally, when students inquired about the industry, she deftly responded with insightful advice.

As the session concluded, Sheronne Dias, a student of the Mass Communication Department at St. Xavier’s College expressed her heartfelt appreciation to Diana Braganza for offering an unfiltered and professionally insightful perspective on the industry, drawn from her personal experiences, that undoubtedly enhanced the educational journey for the students.

A window into the realm of art and understanding

On 3rd October, the S.Y.B.A. students of Mass Communication and Journalism, St. Xavier’s College had the privilege of visiting Sunaparanta, Goa Centre for the Arts in Altinho, Panjim. This visit was organised as a part of their Skill Enhancement Course (SEC) paper ‘Art Appreciation’. During their time at the gallery, the students were exposed to a delightful mix of new and thought-provoking experiences and introduced to how nature and art is intertwined. The gallery exhibited the works of a South Korean artist, Kyungwoo Chun called ‘Songs without lyrics’.

The works were divided into various segments like photographic, video performances and interactive. The artist is known for creating unfamiliar situations that can provoke modes of interdependence, he provides a space for people to enter and deliberate on the meaning of the most ordinary actions. Much of the artist’s work is based on situations and encounters that revolve around concepts of empathy, care and compassion.

The students had to interpret the artwork as they perceived it. The exhibition had layers to it and the rhythmic circulation of time was explained to the students at the end of the visit. This visit provided the students with an in-depth understanding of how different perspectives and experiences of an artist play a role significant role in the process art making.
